What "Saw" Can Teach Us About Appreciating Life – And How It Applies to Fitness

I know what you are thinking, but stay with me here.

Once again, it's the spooky season of Halloween, which is always a favorite time of the year for me. And just like every year, I am fully immersed in my horror movie binge-watching ritual. Undoubtedly, the Saw franchise always takes the lead on my list of must-watch films. I would go as far as to call it my top choice among horror series. It's not the gore, which is the film's most commonly known aspect (and rightfully so), but rather the profound message it delivers through the unique perspective of its central character, Jigsaw.

Don't take your life for granted

This message is priceless and serves as a reminder that we often overlook amidst the hustle and bustle of daily life in today's world. We consistently fail to take a step back and genuinely acknowledge our blessings. Now, how does the importance of cherishing life relate to fitness ? Let's explore this further. (There is a point, i promise)

#1 - Appreciate Your Body’s Potential

In "Saw," the characters are pushed to their limits, physically and mentally, just to survive. But in our daily lives, we often forget how much our bodies are capable of. Whether it's lifting weights, running, or simply stretching, every movement is a reminder of our strength and potential. Don’t wait for a wake-up call to appreciate what your body can do, start today. Celebrate each workout as a gift.

#2 - Take Action Before It's Too Late

One of Jigsaw’s central messages is about taking control of your life before it’s too late. How many times have you said, “I’ll start tomorrow” or “I’ll get to it eventually”? Whether it's starting a new fitness program, eating healthier, or prioritizing your mental well-being, the time to act is now. Don’t wait for a crisis to spark change, start appreciating your health and make proactive decisions today.

#3 - Growth Through Challenge

The challenges in "Saw" are designed to push characters to their breaking point. In fitness, we intentionally push ourselves out of our comfort zones to grow stronger. The discomfort of a tough workout, much like the trials in the movie, builds resilience. It's not about the struggle itself but about what we become through it. Every drop of sweat, every tough set, is a reminder that growth comes through challenge.

#4 - Appreciate the Small Wins

Life, like fitness, isn’t about grand gestures; it's about appreciating the small victories. Whether it's hitting a new personal record in the gym or simply showing up on the days you don’t feel like it, these are the moments that remind us how fortunate we are to have bodies that can move and improve. Just like in "Saw," where survival often hinges on appreciating the smallest opportunities, success in fitness is about celebrating every small step forward.

#5 - Your Health is Your Responsibility

In the "Saw" series, the characters are often confronted with the consequences of neglecting their health, relationships, or purpose. In real life, we may not face life-or-death traps (I hope), but we are responsible for our own well-being. Don’t wait for external forces to compel you to prioritize your health. Take charge of your fitness journey, embrace each day, and commit to living fully.

Final thoughts:

You don’t need a "Saw"-style trial to remind you to appreciate life (but hey, you do you). Your body is a gift, capable of amazing things when you take care of it. So, the next time you hit the gym, run that extra mile, or cook a healthy meal, remember—this is your life. Don’t take it for granted.
